My grandmother was a nurse in WW2 in London. She said the air raid sirens were the most terrifying noise she has ever heard, and that since she was in the
hospital it wasn't like they could really evacuate all the patients. My grandfather died much later of injuries he had from fighting in WW2... No one
really talks about it but I think he had his leg amputated. My other set of grandparents I don't know as well but I DO know they are members of the legion
so I'm guessing they had something to do with the army.
My best friend's boyfriend was in the Army (he's retired now), and my other friend's brother is going to Iraq in the next few months. I also worked at the Dept of National Defence for a summer and I was so relieved when all the units we sent to Afghanistan came back safely. |

My avatar is my paternal great grandpa (the dashing lad with black hair) who served for Canada in World War One. My maternal gr. grandpa did as well, and both
were hit with mustard gas in the trenches but made it home.
The other dashing young man is my paternal grandpa (who I love dearly, may he rest in peace) who served for Canada in WWII with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) that were part of Italian campaign. He was in Italy from December 1939 to June 1945. He never spoke of his time as a Sargent (he was incharge of the Tommy guns), but he had the old school tattoos to mark his achievements. All service men and women have my upmost respect. |
